I'm reminded of the novel "The President's Plane Is Missing". In that story, the President wasn't on the plane, because he was on a secret diplomatic venture in Europe. The plane crashed into a narrow slot canyon in Arizona, and appeared to vanish from the Earth.

I don't think they have slot canyons in that part of Southeast Asia....
