Tulsi Gabbard Auditions For The Russian Nod

I can't believe Tulsi Gabbard will actually openly run as the Russians' pet candidate in 2020, but it's looking increasingly-likely. Gabbard doesn't appeal much to Democrats, but could attract Libertarian and Republican voters, so maybe it's OK to let her do whatever the hell she wants.

Her positions seem idiosyncratic, and not calculated to get mainstream Dem support. She may attract idiosyncratic supporters willing to overlook a lot. In 2016, Jill Stein accepted Russian support, apparently without realizing how it would damage her message. Bernie Sanders resisted the Russians, to his credit. Gabbard may welcome Russian support with gusto, which would be a genuinely-new event in American politics. Just as long as she's open about accepting Russian assistance, that's about all one can ask. After that, caveat emptor. Question is, will she deny getting Russian support and nevertheless get it surreptitiously?
Though Gabbard’s decision makes sense given her fundraising and polling disadvantage, some Democrats cited the move as evidence that she may launch a third-party presidential run after former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton predicted as much in an interview last week.

In an interview with former Obama campaign manager David Plouffe, Clinton claimed that Gabbard was a “favorite of the Russians” and predicted that she was being “groomed” for a third-party run. Clinton said she believed Gabbard may play the same role as 2016 Green Party nominee Jill Stein, whom Clinton labeled a “Russian asset.”

Gabbard fired back, calling Clinton the “queen of warmongers” and the “embodiment of corruption.” Gabbard earlier this year ruled out a third-party run and hit out at “smears” by media outlets, who labeled her an “asset of Russia” in the last Democratic debate.

The Serene Majesty of the Shadow of the Moon

Oh, this is glorious! Todd Kelly points me to this drone video of the Total Eclipse of the Sun, August 21, 2017, as seen from the banks of the Payette River in Cascade, ID, where my cousins and I also were present. Kelly has ID'ed the airliner in the photo as Southwest 5877 from Spokane, WA to Phoenix, AZ. The drone lifts off from about (44.496788°, -116.031189°). Our group was located about 1.1 miles away, at (44.512510°, -116.033214°). Our group is in the the field of view (but lost in the darkness) from about 2:42 to 2:49. Best video ever!

Kelly says:
We were in Cascade on an “Epic Eclipse Expedition” on a private estate adjacent to Trinity Pines and on the banks of the Payette River.

We identified the aircraft in your photo—which also appears in our book and video—using Radarbox24.com:

Southwest flight 5877 from Spokane to Phoenix. Surprisingly, no photos of Totality taken from this flight have been found anywhere online.

Aloha from Kauai 🌴

Total Solar Eclipse 2024 is coming! (Does it pass through Oklahoma this next time??) The book reference appears to be here.

Kelly adds:
My seventeen-year-old (at the time) nephew, Richie, from St. Maries, Idaho, made this remarkable DJI Spark video after only a couple of lessons the day prior to, and a “dry run” the morning of, Eclipse day.

We decided not to show the eclipse itself because of the Spark’s too wide angle lens. I asked only that Richie fly the Spark to 500ft and pan the horizon for the “360 degree sunset” during Totality.

“No pressure, Richie, but please get this video perfect in one take.”
Richie delivered like a pro. In fact, he gracefully dipped the camera and changed direction during Totality while having the presence of mind to view Totality for himself.

Most impressive is that Richie knew how to move both axes of this two axis gimbal camera simultaneously in order to achieve cinematic fluidity. I did not show him how to do that. Maybe it was the video games or the violin!

Richie now attends Harvard University.

Rivulets in the Crows Feet

This morning, Jasper and I arrived at a street corner at the same time as a handsome man in his 30s. The man wore a cap and was carrying a thermos. He appeared to be walking to work.

I looked at the man's face and realized that rivulets of blood were flowing through the laugh lines and crows feet around his eyes. Apparently just out of sight there was a large wound on his forehead.

And so, the man walked off, as did Jasper and I. Just another day in the neighborhood.

Standoff

The large skunk stood under my neighbor’s night light, tail pointing straight up in alarm, and wrestler’s body ready for battle. Meanwhile, Jasper strained on his leash and stood upright, facing off with this unfamiliar creature. Not liking the odds, I dragged Jasper away for better opportunities.

Sharpie Time Again

Why Do Some British People Not Like Donald Trump?

There are reasons:
Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem.

For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace – all qualities, funnily enough, with which his predecessor Mr. Obama was generously blessed.
So for us, the stark contrast does rather throw Trump’s limitations into embarrassingly sharp relief.

Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing – not once, ever.
