Jessica Simpson Backpedals

Jessica Simpson decided not to meet George W. Bush at a Republican fundraiser, because she is representing a non-profit organization (Operation Smile), and feared entangling her group in partisan politics. Such a visit could kill contributions from upset liberals, and have been ethically dicey to boot: 501(c)3 non-profits are banned from participating in partisan politics.

NRCC spokesmen are surprised, pointing to U2's Bono attending such events, but Bono is not an American citizen (and may not have been representing American non-profit organizations).

A wise move on her part!
