Rats Love Hide-and-Seek

Science can be fun!:
Why did the rats play along? It’s possible that they were going after tickles and other social rewards. After all, for two decades researchers have known that rats enjoy being tickled and react by producing ultrasonic chirps that can be compared to laughter. But Reinhold found that once discovered, the rats would often run away and re-hide, delaying their reward and prolonging the game itself. “It seemed really playful,” she says.

She and her colleagues believe that rather than pursuing rewards, the rats were playing for the sake of it. They played because they had fun. For a start, and this is an unusual but welcome line to see in a scientific paper, “the animals looked like they are having fun,” the team writes. When they reunited with Reinhold, they frantically jumped on the spot—a behavior delightfully known as freudensprung, or “joy jumps.” They also teased Reinhold by repeatedly getting close and running away.

Civil War Cannonball Found

Cool!:
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — A man stumbled onto a piece of history when he found a Civil War cannonball lodged in a tree he was hired to remove.

The tree on the Overfelt-Johnston house at Pleasant and Walnut streets was diseased and needed to come down.

The man hired to do that was chopping up leftover pieces when the small cannonball fell out.

"Because of where it was located at, the historical value of this piece -- it was a surprise. But at the same time, it was, like, wow," said Jeff Eastham.

It's Not Fair!

Biden's Lies

Biden lies about important stuff nearly as much as Trump, and that bothers me. I clearly remember Biden’s statements regarding the Iraq War:
Biden did initially back a bill, along with Republican Sen. Richard Lugar, which would have somewhat constrained Bush's capacity to launch an invasion of Iraq completely at his whim. But the Bush administration opposed the measure. One might have thought that such opposition would lead Biden to conclude that Bush insisting on not having any constraint would be a reason not to write him a blank check. But Biden ultimately voted for the legislation giving Bush the complete license the president wanted.

Personal Notes

It looks like there will be a few changes in my life, and I wanted to take note of them.

I auditioned for DMTC's production of Gypsy, coming this November, and succeeded in getting in. Fun!

I am having difficulty with a rapidly-evolving umbicular hernia. My thinning abdomen is a menace. It's like a slow-motion version of the movie Alien, wherein my small intestines are threatening to leap up and leave my belly button. Taking care of dogs is increasingly a problem. A happy dog can jump on me and inadvertently slice me open and disembowel purely by accident. I've talked to a surgeon, and hope to have surgery fairly soon, hopefully when things cool off, perhaps in the winter, after Gypsy closes.

The biggest recent change is work-related. Shortly before I left Sierra Research, in 2015 or 2016, I discussed my coming departure with fellow co-worker Dan Welch. He wanted to start up his own firm, and we agreed I would do air-quality modeling for him when he was ready. And I heard no more about it for several years.

Last week, Dan called, and said he was ready. So, I will soon be doing air quality modeling for pay again. I'll be a subcontractor, and so pay will likely be a bit hit-and-miss, but at least I won't be taking money from my retirement savings quite so much. Maybe I'll be able to travel again. And I won't have to attend quite so many purposeless meetings as I once did. Something nice!

The movie doesn't shift from Buffalo to Albuquerque until late. There are three primary scenes: The Hacienda Restaurant in Old Town, the Luna Lodge, the neighborhood scene, and the airport. Still not sure where the neighborhood scene is located.

There are some nice road shots in this movie, but the places are unfamiliar to me. One clear location is on the road past the big mesa near San Ildefonso: (35.885346°, -106.106661°). Another clear location is the Albuquerque Sunport. There are other locations that are almost clear, like Santa Fe Plaza and the La Fonda Hotel, but these were nighttime shots, and I can't say that with confidence. Santa Fe Airport parking lot and the Ski Basin are other locations that are nearly clear. The chief location is probably Four Seasons Resort - Rancho Encantado - Santa Fe, but I can't say that with confidence.
