The apparent cat-eating frenzy in Ohio (of apparently zero cats) is obviously racist, directed as it is against Haitian immigrants, but it's also misogynist, as it suggests that Childless Cat Ladies are too weak to protect their furbabies. They need big, strong, and hopefully-silent men to flex their muscles in defense. This faux issue is like catnip to MAGA and the GOP, who want to ride to the rescue of the cats after all the battering they've received lately. 

 It's absurd. Who can't see through it? Taylor Swift sees right through it. Vote Democratic.

A Well-Deserved Rest

I was on Folsom Blvd. westbound, waiting for the traffic light to turn green at Power Inn Blvd. during the afternoon rush hour, when the left-turn arrow turned green. Vehicles in the far left-turn lane started turning, but not in the near lane. What was wrong? Apparently the driver had fallen asleep. 

It's been a long day, O Driver! Sleep well. I suspect your rest won't last long.

The Fuckin' New York Times Again

Every day that goes by serves as a reminder about how unfit the New York Times is as a newspaper. On July 11th they issued a denunciation of Trump, but only after denouncing Biden immediately following his June debate performance (the spineless ones realized very, very late that they needed to balance their denunciations in order not to look too biased). 

"The board questioned Trump's morals, character, principles, honesty and fidelity to the law and found him lacking in each category...." 

Despite all these supposedly disqualifying points they still strongly support Trump for the presidency. 

"The case against Mr. Trump is extensive, and this board urges Americans to perform a simple act of civic duty in an election year: Listen to what Mr. Trump is saying, pay attention to what he did as president and allow yourself to truly inhabit what he has promised to do if returned to office." 

What does that statement even mean? Why do we need to "truly inhabit" anything? The New York Times says we should perform every civic duty EXCEPT the ONLY civic duty that will make any difference at all - vote for Kamala Harris! 

Spineless cowards. Abject MAGA slaves. The New York Times makes me ill.

Monsoon Rain is Falling in the Sahara

The Atlantic hurricane season this year has so far been rather anemic. The article at the link blames warm waters in the North Atlantic for the situation. The warm waters have shifted the annual monsoon season in Africa farther north. They are receiving rain throughout the Sahara Desert, which happens only rarely. So, the proto-hurricanes that spin off westward from the African coast are passing offshore too far north, and not encountering the warm waters that would get them going.

In normal years the subtropical high pressure area, a heat dome, sits relentlessly over the Sahara. The sands are so reflective, the air so dry and the ground is so hot that heat is actually lost to space over the Sahara under normal conditions. That leads to hot days and cool nights with huge temperature swings especially near the equinoxes. This September’s equinox period will be very abnormal with cooler days, warmer nights and intrusions of tropical air from the African monsoon.

The Sahara wasn’t always a desert. From the beginning of the interglacial period up to 6000 years ago, there were lakes in the Sahara. Megalake Chad and the other Saharan lakes were so large that they kept the climate moist even after the orbital parameters that brought maximum insolation to the Arctic in late spring and early summer ending the last glacial period became less favorable. However, 6000 years ago the solar heating patterns caused by earth’s orbital variations brought more ocean warming to the southern hemisphere and less to the northern hemisphere and the north Atlantic cooled. The cooling of the north Atlantic waters brought on the drying of the Sahara and the desert conditions that have predominated the region for the past 5000 years.

But this summer something is different. The waters of the north Atlantic are relatively hot while the waters of the south Atlantic are relatively cool. And the waters of the Indian ocean on the east coast of Africa are very warm. And the Mediterranean sea is hot. 

The high heat content of the north Atlantic and the Mediterranean sea has affected the atmospheric circulation patterns bringing exceptional heat to far northern Europe and allowing the heat dome over western north Africa to break down, bringing monsoon moisture north into the Sahara desert.

Closing a Cardiac Chapter

Today's visit to Dr. Xu, my cardiologist (and the busiest man in Sacramento), felt like the closing of a 6.5-year chapter in my life. 

The cardiac chapter opened around Valentine's Day, 2018, on a visit to Albuquerque, NM. I felt unusually tired; just dog-tired. Albuquerque's cold February wind just blew right through me. I blamed a cold virus and the altitude for the fatigue. I returned to Sacramento and had trouble with Zumba and theater rehearsal.

It took several days before dizziness finally brought me to the doctor. I was quickly directed to Sutter Medical Center, where they diagnosed a heart attack, apparently brought on by asymptomatic atrial fibrillation (Afib) - a condition that can also easily cause strokes. It was hard to square something dangerous with the lack of pain.

Not everyone was sure about the diagnosis, however. One of the ER doctors said, "This looks just like a cocaine heart attack." "Really?," I replied. "Yes," he said. He pondered a bit and said, "So, just how much cocaine did you have?" (Even heart attacks are the grist for the humor mill, sometimes.) 

Since 2018, I've been using drugs to (imperfectly) control the Afib. In May of this year, it became evident the drugs weren't working well-enough anymore, so on July 26th I had a catheter ablation procedure to fix the Afib. 

The ablation procedure has a pretty-high failure rate, but so far it seems to be working well. I have worries about various possible failures, but there's apparently little reason to be worried. I mentioned Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) to Dr. Xu, which, according to my advanced medical research on the Internet, is associated with severe dilation of the right atrium, a condition I was diagnosed with. The nurse-practitioner tried to reassure me: "It's not just your right atrium; your left atrium is dilated too." Great!  Dr. Xu said that SCD comes from a dilated ventricle, not a dilated atrium (which puts him at odds with the nether regions of the Internet, but oh well, he's the expert, as well as being the busiest man in Sacramento). 

This visit felt like a definite end, for now anyway. Time to get myself out of here.  I'm normal now.  I'm now feeling nostalgic for this very-poorly but very-aptly-named place, Sutter Medical Center's Invasive Cardiology Clinic. Time to close this door. Maybe later I can tell war stories about all the cocaine I (never) had. Like the song says: "You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here."

"Jersey Boys" at Music Circus - August 30, 2024

I got a call from Gabe. He had four tickets for "Jersey Boys" at Music Circus. Would I be interested? I scrambled to find takers at such short notice. Despite her busy schedule, Rachel was available, which was great. I wasn't able to get anyone for the other two tickets. though.

I found the opening of the show to be offputting.  Apparently, "Oh, What a Night (December, 1963)" inspired a French rap hit in 2002.  Opening the show with a French song confused me.  The rest of the show was great, though, particularly when the hits started to become more familiar.

David Williams played second keyboard in the show's orchestra.  I saw him at intermission.  Good to see him again.

Here is my favorite song Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons ever sang. (Not surprisingly, it's the last, most-discofied hit they ever sang). This song was also the finale of the show.

   

This show is mostly a guys show, but there was a chorus of three women; one of whom was Sacramento's own Jessica Crouch.  Jessie played Francine in the show.  She has become a recognized player on Broadway.  I was impressed hearing that Jessie won the New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF) Next Broadway Sensation contest in 2015.  It's tough to win a contest against Broadway's best singers!

I was in "Carnival" with Jessie in 2002 at DMTC.  She played the lead Lily when she was only fifteen years old.  Actually, I didn't recognize her until the show was over - it's been 22 years, after all.

Pineapple Juice

I was perusing the garden section at Target when a mysterious woman in sunglasses and Covid mask began pushing her shopping cart down the rather narrow aisle towards me and my shopping cart. It was pretty obvious to me there wasn’t enough room in the aisle for both shopping carts, but she advanced anyway and crashed into my cart. 

A struggle ensued where she continued ramming my cart and eventually was able to force her way through, but in her haste to escape dropped a six-pack of small cans of pineapple juice on the floor. I picked up the cans, but she fled. 

I took this incident as an omen. The Universe was telling me that I’m not drinking enough pineapple juice. So, despite not being on my shopping list, I purchased the six pack and took it home.

Been Working On

I'm making plans to do a 2025 auto tour of New Mexico with Kris Jones, a film historian who is affiliated with Chattanooga State Community College. Next year will be the 50th anniversary of the filming of one of his all-time favorite movies, Nicholas Roeg's "The Man Who Fell To Earth," starring David Bowie, which was filmed mainly in New Mexico. My experience with "Breaking Bad" filming locations gives me skills that might be helpful in this task, particularly since I remember 1975 quite clearly.  Kris wants to visit as many filming locations as possible, so we are doing the prep work necessary to identify these filming locations. Some of the filming locations are quite difficult to ferret out, but there is some progress. Earlier this week I think I finally located the flying-cookies Santa Fe residence used in the film. (Residences are so hard, sometimes.) So, next year, Albuquerque/Fenton Lake/Los Lunas/Belen/Santa Fe/Madrid/White Sands/Artesia. and more.

I'm continuing work on the follow up to the "Breaking Bad" talk I gave last February, to be titled "The Hopi Influence on Better Call Saul."  I think I'm still supposed to be doing a chapter in a book on religion in "Breaking Bad" (but contact has been thin lately).

I'm not substitute teaching or doing anything to make me more economically viable right now, but that could always change.

Update, a Month After The Catheter Ablation

Several days after my catheter ablation I read the After Visit Summary (AVS) on the Sutter website and noted that they had identified that I had "Severe Dilation of the Right Atrium." When you look that up on my favorite medical resource, the Internet, it's associated with "Sudden Cardiac Death." That had me worried, particularly after attending the memorial service for Bethany Hidden a month ago, who passed away just before her 40th birthday (apparently after some sort of cardiac episode). So, would I just face plant some day, without warning? 

The nurse practitioner tried to reassure me. It wasn't just the right atrium; the left atrium was enlarged too. Plus, apparently it's just not that simple. She didn't know why the enlarging was occurring - perhaps some trouble delivering blood to the lung? - but the EKG was now normal, and that should help. So, we'll see how this goes. 

Next week, I meet the cardiologist.

The Disgrace at Arlington Cemetery

Donald Trump barging into Arlington National Cemetery for campaign pictures is an insult to veterans and their families. This is hallowed ground. The fact that Republicans can’t tell anymore what is holy is an even worse disgrace:

Trump's team was told he could attend only in his personal capacity and that campaign staff members were not allowed. Some of his top campaign staffers reportedly attended Monday's event despite the rules set by cemetery officials. Also in attendance were several Republican politicians, including Governor Spencer Cox of Utah, now under fire for using a photo of the event in a re-election campaign fundraising email.

"No hats, signs or banners were allowed, according to military officials," The Post also reported. "No speeches. Reporters and photographers could follow Trump for a ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns, but not to the 14-acre plot where veterans from recent wars are buried, known as Section 60. The media was kept away, unable to see the altercation — or anything else, for that matter — during that part of his visit." 

That "altercation," reportedly involved a cemetery official who later filed a report stating Trump's team verbally and physically assaulted her, according to multiple reports. She has said she is unwilling to press charges out of fear of retaliation from Trump's supporters, according to The New York Times. The Trump campaign denies the allegations while campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung told The Times the reason for her decision to refuse to press charges “is ridiculous and sounds like someone who has Trump Derangement Syndrome.”

Trump is Now Pro-Choice

One of those interesting little campaign moments is that Trump has decided to ditch the evangelicals and become pro-choice again. Pro-life looked like a loser position anyway. Better to join the winning side. It will be interesting to see if anyone notices his casual betrayal:

From a pro-life perspective, though, it’s actually worse than that. Trump has done what no Democrat—not Bill or Hillary Clinton, not Mario Cuomo or John Kerry, not Joe Biden or Barack Obama, not any Democrat—could have done. He has, at the national level, made the Republican Party de facto pro-choice. Having stripped the pro-life plank from the GOP platform, having said that Governor Ron DeSantis’s ban on abortion after six weeks is “too harsh” and a “terrible mistake,” and having promised to veto a national abortion ban, Trump has now gone one step further, essentially advocating for greater access to abortion.

To make the point as succinctly as I can make it, then, what I find fascinating about ex-Twitter's engagement collapse is that it shouldn't even be possible to engineer one so dramatic. That's what's so mystifying: No matter how much Elon Musk sucks at business, from a strictly technical sense he would have had to all but set fire to the company's server banks to shed active users at the rate he's shedding them. This isn't about "oh, the company's so much more tolerant of white supremacists now." Take a good look at America: Do you really think Americans shy away from involving themselves with white supremacists? Do we imagine ex-Twitter's userbase is shunning the platform because Musk owns it, or because he's unbanned some previously banned people? You and I wish. 

No, what's happening here isn't a boycott or even general user ennui. Something broke, inside ex-Twitter, and it broke hard enough to force Twitter's own customer base off the platform in the rough span of a single year. If you're an author dependent on "X" to reach your fans, that's been catastrophic. If you're Elon Musk, it's almost comically humiliating—or would be, if he was paying attention. But from a strictly tech-and-tech-management perspective it's a fascinating development. It's like watching the peak-obliterating explosion of a long-dormant volcano. Scientists will want to put an array of instruments all around this thing, measuring every last twitch and tremor, to see just how the company's managers managed to achieve a scale of damage that's usually thought to be near-impossible.

RFK, Jr., Endorses Trump

I always saw RFK, Jr., as a Trumper - nothing more; nothing less. I'm surprised billionaires supported Kennedy, since he was bound to split the Trump vote. If they wanted to make a more-serious effort to split the Democratic Party they should have supported Cornel West. My understanding is that West was willing to play, and desperately-trying to get billionaire support, but West had a history as a leftist. The billionaires believed their own propaganda, and thought more-malleable RFK, Jr. could better corral fame-addled Democrats without any leftist baggage. Anyway, the joke's on the billionaires. I doubt Trump will get anything more than a vapor-thin bump.

A DMV employee stopped me this morning and warned me about going into the alley directly behind my own house, because someone, apparently a woman, was jumped by several people waiting in a car and robbed there. I need to learn more about this. I slept pretty hard this morning. Probably slept through the whole thing.

When You Recognize Friends in the News

The last time this happened was around 1999.  Now, history repeats.  This doesn't look good:

Fourteen men suspected of engaging in illegal and explicit conversations with children over social media have been arrested after a three-day undercover child predator operation led by the Yuba County Sheriff’s Office and Yuba County District Attorney’s Office, in partnership with the Sacramento Valley Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. Several of those facing charges are residents from Sacramento County, according to a press release from the District Attorney’s office.

The men suspected of these crimes were on a number of popular social media sites when they began some extremely suggestive conversations with who, they believed to be, young girls. Explicit messages were sent and arrangements were made for the suspects to come and engage in sexual acts with the juvenile.

Fortunately, instead of coming face-to-face with an innocent child, the suspects were met by agents from various regional departments and promptly arrested.

...“There are no safe places on the Internet or in our community for child predators,” Yuba County District Attorney Clint Curry said. “Protecting the most vulnerable in our communities is our core responsibility. When it comes to those who would prey upon our children, there is nothing that we will not do within the parameters of the law to find you and hold you accountable for your actions.”

If I had only been paying closer attention to the back alley maybe I would have seen it before it met its fate (probably crushed by a passing car). It was probably attracted by the bird seed I lay out. I just didn't see it in time.

Cutting The Big Branch - August 8, 2024

Before.  I recall the late 90s, when this oak tree was growing like a weed.  I knew there would a cost from this tree branch eventually.  The branch leaned over and arced over the roof.  I thought it would eventually come in contact with the house as it bent over from the rapidly-growing weight, but the branch also grew upwards, so it never quite came in contact with the house.  Oak trees are very sturdy, and the branch didn't collapse as other, more-brittle tree branches did from the other tree growing next door did.  Still, I was uneasy.  That's tons of wood over the house!

Before.  Tons of wood above me.  I got in contact with this tree person via the husband of an actress with whom I had been on stage back in 2012.  A team of four people came out.  Three of them entered the back yard at the same time Jasper did, and I worried Jasper might nip them, but I was also holding Jasper's leash.  Jasper was so enthralled by the idea of taking a walk that he completely-ignored the presence of three total strangers in the back yard.  Amazing, that dog's focus!

The low-energy Trump has exactly one event this week, in the critical swing state of… Montana.

I was pleased to see this show. I was surprised that the song "My Eyes Are Fully Open" was in this show, since it's also in the later show "The Pirates of Penzance." It's very popular and one of the most difficult songs I've ever heard of in English. 

I was also surprised how many people I knew in the show: Martin Lehman as Sir Despard Murgatroyd of Ruddigore, Eve Nyren, Krissy Schwerin, and Keith Gray. Don Draughon was supposed to be in the show, but he was apparently sick. 

Here is "The Pirates of Penzance" version of "My Eyes Are Fully Open." I saw this performance live by Opera Australia in 2006, in Brisbane, Queensland, AU.

 

"Bloody Bethy" Memorial Service - August 3, 2024

It came as a shocking surprise to hear that Bethany Hidden, "Bloody Bethy," twin sister of Brianne Hidden, had passed away shortly before her 40th birthday. On Saturday, her family and friends had a memorial service at the Colonial Theater on Stockton Boulevard in Sacramento.

Bethany was well-known in the Sacramento Horror Community, and her reputation extended beyond.  I was pleased that Joe Bob Briggs sent a message of support.

The first part of the Bloody Bethy Memorial Service finished with Alex Hogy’s story of how the age difference between himself and Beth sometimes led to confusion, with Beth sometimes mistaken as his girlfriend or his mom.
