Paranormal thriller, based upon the character and novel by Dean Koontz. A fry cook who can see dead people gets involved in a war of good vs. evil. Starring Willem Dafoe, Tim Robbins, Anton Yelchin, 50 Cent, Patton Oswalt, Addison Timlin, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Nico Tortorella, and Melissa Ordway. Filming locations: Albuquerque, Pecos, Plaza Cafe (Santa Fe), Rio en Medio (near Tesuque), Rio Rancho, Sandia Pueblo, Santa Fe, Winrock Mall (Albuquerque), Zia Pueblo.

https://www.filmedthere.com/odd-thomas.html
The scenes below are of the town square where Odd Thomas works. The actual location is the Santa Fe, Plaza. The address is 63 Lincoln Ave, Santa Fe, NM. 87501. The Plaza Cafe is the actual location used for the restaurant. The apartment that Stormy lives in is also located in the plaza.

From imdb:

Plaza Cafe Downtown - 54 Lincoln Ave., Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA
(Pico Mundo Grille)
Winrock Mall - 155 Winrock Center, Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA
(Facade of Green Moon Mall; parking lot of mall; ice cream shop)
Garson Studios, College of Santa Fe - 1600 Saint Michaels Drive, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA
Saint Anthonys Catholic Church, Pecos, New Mexico, USA
(St. Barts/belfry)

https://santafe.com/blogs/read/odd-thomas-visits-the-city-different
The production used a lot of recognizable locations. Prominent is the “Pico Mundo Café,” really the Plaza Café, closed at the time because of its kitchen fire, but briefly reopened as a movie set. Likewise, the company resuscitated the shuttered Silva Lanes to sub as “Green Moon Bowling,” and a refurbished room at the old St. Vincent’s Hospital, amidst its transformation into the Drury Hotel, was Odd’s abode. Out of town, the church in Rio en Medio became “St. Bart’s,” and Cottonwood Mall in Albuquerque was morphed into “Green Moon Mall.” There’s also a predictably spooky sequence in Old Main at the State Pen.

Greed, the Pebble Mine, and Bristol Bay

Development decisions are now being made purely based on greed, with expertise put to the sword. Gold mining is immensely harmful and developing the Pebble Mine will be especially destructive, given that the world's greatest salmon run is based in Bristol Bay, as are a number of other fisheries and whale feeding grounds:
The Environmental Protection Agency told staff scientists that it was no longer opposing a controversial Alaska mining project that could devastate one of the world's most valuable wild salmon fisheries just one day after President Trump met with Alaska's governor, CNN has learned.

The EPA publicly announced the reversal July 30, but EPA staff sources tell CNN that they were informed of the decision a month earlier, during a hastily arranged video conference after Trump's meeting with Gov. Mike Dunleavy. The governor, a supporter of the project, emerged from that meeting saying the president assured him that he's "doing everything he can to work with us on our mining concerns."

The news came as a "total shock" to some top EPA scientists who were planning to oppose the project on environmental grounds, according to sources. Those sources asked to remain anonymous for fear of retribution.

The copper-and-gold mine planned near Bristol Bay, Alaska, known as Pebble Mine, was blocked by the Obama administration's EPA after scientists found that the mine would cause "complete loss of" the bay's fish habitat.

"Let Me In" - Are You A Vampire?

Some great films have been made in New Mexico in recent years.

"Let Me In" is a 2010 American-British romantic horror film written and directed by Matt Reeves and starring, among others, Chloë Grace Moretz. It is a remake of the 2008 Swedish film "Let the Right One In," based on the 2004 novel of the same title by John Ajvide Lindqvist, who also wrote the screenplay. The film tells the story of a bullied 12-year-old boy who develops a friendship with a female child vampire.

The film is set in Los Alamos in 1983, and filmed both there and in Albuquerque.

Love this scene:

An Analysis of an Obscenity

Trump, the most evil man in the universe:
A really exceptional work of obscenity, like a really exceptional work of beauty, exceeds the ability of its viewers to fathom what they just saw. Did that just happen? But … how? What sorcery created it? Words don’t arrive, and the stammering gives way to silence.

Cloudflare Tries To Save A Bit Of Its Dignity

Looks like 8chan will have to go elsewhere for their Internet services:
8chan is among the more than 19 million Internet properties that use Cloudflare's service. We just sent notice that we are terminating 8chan as a customer effective at midnight tonight Pacific Time. The rationale is simple: they have proven themselves to be lawless and that lawlessness has caused multiple tragic deaths. Even if 8chan may not have violated the letter of the law in refusing to moderate their hate-filled community, they have created an environment that revels in violating its spirit.

Film Clip From "Lonely Street"

As an Albuquerque native, this just made me smile.

Spreading The Word

Knock, knock, knock! Early in the morning, and two evangelists were at the door, one of whom I recognized from previous visits. “I hear you do a lot of theater?” the lead fellow (a Millennial) said. “Yes. Our youth theater just finished doing ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,’” I said.

Even though the fellow explained he had done theater in high school, he had never heard of the show. “It’s a take on a Bible story?” I said. I could tell no bells were ringing in his head. I began to elaborate. He self-deprecatingly replied, “When I hear the word ‘Technicolor’ I think of television. I come from a generation where we watched a lot of television.” (Not as much as in my generation, though, where by the age of 14 I could recite ‘Gilligan’s Island’ rerun dialogue from memory.)

So, I began to evangelize about ‘Joseph,’ and the many good points of community musical theater. I talked on and on, expansively declaiming on any number of subjects. “Don’t ever let businessmen on your theater boards,” I warned, “because they look for profits. There are no profits to be made in community musical theater, so the logical businesslike thing to do is shut down your theaters.”

At the end of their visit, they remembered to refer to their tablet and leave me with a Bible quotation. It was something that I couldn’t quite follow (from Matthew 6??). After greeting Jasper, they bade me farewell. (Were they Jehovah Witnesses? Maybe – can’t recall - but no telltale Watchtower.) Glad to get the Word out there.

Close Call

Jasper was pulling on his leash as we walked through a dark, well-to-do neighborhood at 1 a.m. Suddenly he stopped and started whining. *Some animal* was located just eight feet (2.5 m) away in the shadows. Lo and behold, it was a skunk, tail pointed straight up and prepared to fire! Nevertheless, the skunk kept its cool and merely walked away.

Big Sky (2014) - Hazel Goes For Help

It's fun looking at various Albuquerque-based films, and seeing how different creative teams envision the desert.

Here is a clip from one very-strange film - "Big Sky" (2014).

I enjoy walking through the New Mexico desert, and find it soothing. In contrast, severe agoraphobe Hazel (Bella Thorne) dreads the exposure.

The Heritage House, 207 High St. NE

The Heritage House was built around 1907 in the Huning Highland Historic District of Albuquerque. The historic district got its name from Franz Huning, one of the developers of the district. This district was developed to accommodate the many individuals moving to Albuquerque from the east in the 1800s when the railroad came to Albuquerque. This accounts for the more Victorian style of the home, which is unusual for this area, due to the heavy influence of the Southwest adobe style. The Heritage House is a Dutch colonial home that is otherwise known as the “Simpson House” in some records because the Simpson family was one of the longer owners of the home; they owned the house from 1922 to 1950. The house has had a variety of owners, from physicians and telegraph operators, to employees of the surrounding hospitals. From the records we have found, the house has always been a single-family home – something rare for many of the homes in this historic district.
