RIP, Blue

Blue, on August 14, 2026.

I was just arriving at the weekly Saturday protest on October 10th when Gabe called.

Gabe and Eleanor have two dogs, Blue and Molly. Gabe and Eleanor have had Blue since 2014. In recent years, large fatty tumors have belabored Blue, eventually making it hard for her to walk, but never otherwise affecting her health, until Thursday. Apparently the tumors had critically affected her liver. Suddenly, Gabe and Eleanor were faced with having to put Blue down.

I set up my signs at the protest, enlisted others to care for them, and went directly to Gabe and Eleanor's house.

Both Molly and Blue barked at my arrival. Blue revived a bit at the interruption, and all of us together were able to spend precious time with a more-alert Blue before she crossed that Rainbow Bridge.  I returned to the protest and Gabe took Blue to the vet.

Good old Blue, a dog I spent many happy dog-sitting hours with.

RIP, RJ Mitte

Everyone is thunderstruck at the passing of Breaking Bad's RJ Mitte, who played Walter White, Jr., at the age of 34, apparently of suicide.

Parts of the show will hit differently now because of this event.  RJ’s passing puts a darker edge on his scenes. It brings out the tragedy of human life- all that struggle, crushed in the end. It does make it harder to watch: I’m also thinking of the 1972 movie Godspell and the dances they innocently filmed atop the brand-new World Trade Center. But it also makes it more important than ever to watch these scenes.

Suicide is always mysterious to me. The closest we'll get for an explanation for now are Luis Moncada's two videos.

The first video shows Luis and RJ flying in a hot air balloon at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta earlier this month. RJ does not look happy here.

The second video is very recent, post suicide.

Needing Help To Break a Lease

You see some strange things, protesting ICE at the John Moss Federal Building.

This fellow came to take video and photographs of the anti-ICE protesters on October 1, 2026, but overstayed his welcome by photographing too insistently, particularly when he approached children. The protesters interrupted and surrounded the fellow, and demanded to know who he was and what he was doing. The fellow refused to leave and started calling various parties on his phone, likely including the police. He told various lies, for example, by stating on the phone that he was not being allowed to leave, when the truth was that he wouldn't leave.

We had various theories about what his intentions were, I thought he might be taking photos for our conservative political opponents, or for his own records - a solo crank. Others worried he might have pedophilia on his mind, or might be off his dementia meds. But based on what a few people overheard, he might have had a different motive. He apparently lives nearby and wants to break the lease on his apartment. Having video footage of the occasionally noisy protest might help him in that regard.
