It Would Solve So Many Problems

I thought the term 86 came from law enforcement and meant killing, but now I understand it comes from catering and food safety and just means removal.

The number codes are used to identify electrical protective relaying behaviors. E.g. 50s are on-off switch variations. 86 is a lockout device that prevents restart / reclosure of the relay until manual reset occurs. Other codes are simple over-voltage, over-current, etc. Never heard the food safety side other than its use in bars and restaurants to indicate the person could not return. The relaying codes go way back in some old electrical drawings and texts I've seen (1930s - 1940s at least.)
