Ideally, the nominee should complement the strengths of the presidential nominee, and add reach to the ticket, traditionally by coming from a different part of the country. In recent contests, however, the vice-presidential nominee often mirrors the presidential nominee (Clinton-Gore and Trump-Vance come to mind).
The names that are most being bandied about now are Gretchen Whitmer (MI) and Josh Shapiro (PA), because they are great candidates, come from battleground states, and complement a presidential candidate from California.
Still, there are plenty of folks who would make great VP candidates. Here is my list:
- Beto O'Rourke (TX)
- Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY)
- Jim McGovern (MA)
- Pete Buttigieg (IN)
- Jamie Raskin (MD)
- Raphael Warnock (GA)
Who are some of your favorite vice-presidential candidates?
