INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — A man stumbled onto a piece of history when he found a Civil War cannonball lodged in a tree he was hired to remove.
The tree on the Overfelt-Johnston house at Pleasant and Walnut streets was diseased and needed to come down.
The man hired to do that was chopping up leftover pieces when the small cannonball fell out.
"Because of where it was located at, the historical value of this piece -- it was a surprise. But at the same time, it was, like, wow," said Jeff Eastham.
