Van Down By The River
I actually recall seeing this when it first came out. Floored me then. By now, it's a classic. Can't get enough!
RIP, Lucia Trujillo
Lucia was my cousin Max's second wife. I last saw her in 2015. She happily detailed how she was chosen to represent Sandia Pueblo for a ceremonial appearance at the Obama White House. Excellent!
She was sweet. I will miss her....
Second Moderna, In The Arm!
And as Sutter was doing its passive-aggressive best to vaccinate just as few people as possible, Blue Shield was developing its disappointing MyTurn web site. They were tasked with taking over vaccine distribution statewide, but were rejected by counties across the state. So, in Sacramento, it's fallen on the pharmacies to get people vaccinated - not really a priority, it seemed. So, Sacramento County lags the state in vaccination rates, and has persistently high Covid rates - right now, the highest in the state. It would be nice if Sacramento County could get some attention on these matters.
Still, these are First World problems. Glad to finally arrive!
Jellyfish Submarine
Australian photographer Tim Samuel managed to get a once-in-a-lifetime shot while free diving off The Pass in Byron Bay, on the north coast of New South Wales. The marvelous images present the bizarre sight of a fish stuck inside of a jellyfish. Even more unusual is that, according to Samuel, the trapped fish was able to control where the jellyfish moved, like some sort of twisted version of a living and breathing submarine.
The shots seem to capture the expression of utmost horror (or maybe it's confusion?) on the face of the poor little fish, confined to his jelly-prison. A photographer for over five years, and a surfing instructor before that, Samuel claims to have never seen anything like this in all his years spent in the water.

Where Does Fake News Come From?
As is clear from this article, the reporters are ordered to write it:
The New York Post temporarily deleted, and then edited and republished, a debunked article that falsely claimed that copies of Vice President Kamala Harris' book were being included in "welcome kits" given to migrant children at a shelter in Long Beach, California.
The reporter who wrote the article, Laura Italiano, tweeted late Tuesday afternoon that she had resigned from the newspaper. Italiano tweeted: "The Kamala Harris story -- an incorrect story I was ordered to write and which I failed to push back hard enough against -- was my breaking point."
...On the media tour, Southern California News Group staff photographer Brittany Murray took a photo of a single copy of the Harris book sitting on a cot along with a backpack and hygiene items. A cot in the background of the shot has two unrelated books on it.
Another Murray photo from the media tour shows different books on other cots. It is unclear why the New York Post decided to suggest that the Harris book would be included in welcome kits. Murray said in an email that there were no more than five books in the section of the facility they toured, "all different titles/authors," and that the "only mention of books during the tour was a request for book donations from the public."
Nathaniel Percy, a Long Beach Press-Telegram reporter who was on the tour with Murray, said in an email, "I did not see any other copies of Harris' book while on the tour." Percy also said, "I did not see anything suggesting that the children would be receiving any books in welcome kits upon their arrival."

Radio-Controlled Gliders Edging Close to Mach 1
This stuff blows my mind:
The fastest remote-controlled airplane flight ever recorded took place in 2018, with a top speed of 545 miles/hour. That’s 877 km/h, or Mach 0.77!
What was the limiting factor, preventing the pilot-and-designer Spencer Lisenby’s plane from going any faster? The airstream over parts of the wing hitting the sound barrier, and the resulting mini sonic booms wreaking havoc on the aerodynamics.
...Dynamic soaring (DS) was first harnessed to propel model planes sometime in the mid 1990s. ... But dynamic soaring is anything but new. Indeed, it’s been possible ever since there has been wind and slopes on the earth. Albatrosses, the long-distance champs of the animal kingdom, have been “DSing” forever, and we’ve known about it for a century.
...When wind blows over a hill, it has to go up and over, with emphasis on the “up”. Glider pilots have used this ridge lift to their advantage for a long time, and the model airplane practice of gliding around indefinitely in the ridge lift on the front side of a hill is called “slope soaring”. With an infinite source of lift, model gliders can do all sorts of fun acrobatics using very little power, as long as they don’t hit the hill or fly up and over to the back side of the mountain.
On the back side, the air pulls back down again, and there’s a strange turbulent zone between the moving air up-top, and the wind-shadow in the valley where the air is still. The back side was known to eat model airplanes, first pulling them downwards a little, then tumbling them around, and then leaving them to slowly sink in the still air.
...Until one day, when glider pilot extraordinaire (and aeronautical engineer) Joe Wurts flew up and over. He realized that he couldn’t make it back against the strong wind, and didn’t want to hike down, so he aimed the plane at the valley floor. It picked up speed, crossed the turbulent zone, and entered the still air where he was able to fly it back to the crest of the hill because he wasn’t fighting the strong headwind. When it climbed and re-entered the wind stream, he noticed that it had picked up speed. Then he started doing it on purpose.
...And fast is fast. The progress in speed records stalled for a number of years due to the fact that there were no commercially available radar guns that would measure above 300 mph ....
When the sport was young, the highest achievable speeds were limited by the stiffness of the wings: Flutter is the wing-killer. If an oscillation in the wing starts up at high speed, there’s a lot of energy to keep it amplifying, and the result is that the wing tears itself apart or away from the body of the plane.
...When Spencer manages to design and build a plane that can approach the sound barrier, the next limiting factor may be the human in the loop. At speeds already in excess of 200 m/s, a human’s reaction and decision time of around 250 ms to 500 ms translates to 100 m of plane travel. If a plane hits bad turbulence at those speeds while only 20 m above the ground, it could be carbon-fiber dust before any meatbag even has a chance to blink. To quote Spencer, “With each new speed, you get this feeling like you’re in over your head and your brain can’t keep up with what’s happening.”
Eva Encinias Sandoval is Retiring
Eva Encinias Sandoval is retiring from UNM. I remember seeing the flamenco expert in the late 70s, at events sponsored by UNM's Ballroom Dance Club. She loves dance of all kinds. She was at these events out of pure curiosity:
“I’ve been eligible for some time and people kept telling me you can retire at any time. I had it in the back of my mind, but I love my work and always have,” she said. “When COVID hit, online teaching became really difficult. I’m not technically adept and dance has its complexity. I knew from the beginning it was not going to end in six months.”
Encinias Sandoval’s roots in dance are deep. Her mother, Clarita Garcia de Aranda Allison, owned an Albuquerque studio near Edith and Candelaria boulevards in Albuquerque and taught all types of dancing from ballroom to ballet. Influenced by her mother and brother, Allison also taught flamenco. Encinias Sandoval and all eight of her siblings danced too.
...Encinias Sandoval brought the Spanish dance form to the community as well as the university, founding the National Institute of Flamenco in 1992 with lessons for all ages, including children. The non-profit Institute was originally located on Central Avenue across from UNM buildings and passersby could watch the children in swirling skirts and hard-soled shoes twirl and stamp through their lessons. The studio is now located in the Sawmill Area. The Institute is a family affair with Encinias Sandoval as the founding director, her daughter Marisol as the executive director, and her son Joaquin as artistic director.
The Free State of Socorro
1953 was a weird time in Socorro::
It all began in early 1953 with a simple traffic ticket issued on the dusty streets of Socorro, population 4,300.
A 60-year-old plumber named Elmer Brasher had been drinking too much and made the serious mistake of trying to drive. Police officer Lorenzo Lopez stopped Brasher and cited him for breaking the local ordinance against Driving While Intoxicated.
...Judge Fowler dutifully asked to see the Socorro city ordinance regarding DWI arrests. After a considerable search of the courthouse, the original ordinance could not be found, although a reference to it was discovered in the back files of the local newspaper, the Socorro Chieftain. Someone wrote out the reference in pencil and brought it to the judge.
...And if Socorro’s DWI ordinance lacked authority, what about the city’s other ordinances? Did they have any more authority than the DWI ordinance? A March 19, 1953, Socorro Chieftain headline announced the disturbing news that “Socorro Laws Probably All Are Null and Void Says Judge.”
Without city ordinances, some local residents questioned the legality of not only the laws but the city itself. The Chieftain’s editor, Ed Stanton, went so far as to declare, “Nobody’s done anything legal around here since Oñate” and the Spanish conquest of New Mexico in 1598.
...Maybe they could create a whole new state, if not something much larger. According to newspapers in many parts of the United States, “The more Socorro people thought about it, the better idea it seemed just to secede from the United States and start all over again.”
By April, the Socorro Chieftain reported “a serious but small group of patriots” had spent much of an evening drafting a Declaration of Independence.
RIP, Richard Newman
Ah, Black Sheep Richard, the sole liberal in a conservative family (my brother-in-law's brother), and a fan of this very blog! I'm glad your suffering is over, but I will miss your sense of humor!

Fireball XL-5, Back In The Day
I was six years old in the summer of 1963, and felt like I was playing catch-up. I had only recently become interested in the space program and felt starved for information. I had watched on TV the launch of astronaut Gordon Cooper in May, but his was the last of the Mercury flights and it would be a long, long while before the Gemini flights commenced. Where could a young boy turn for assistance?
Fireball XL-5 was the Saturday morning show for me! At last, I felt I was getting useful data. I would soon be disappointed - the British show lasted only one season - but at least I finally felt a connection to the Dawn of the Space Age!
Jamie O. mentions "Thunderbirds" too, which was apparently the follow-on series I never saw:
And "UFO" too, which I never saw:
Cat Scratch Fever
Ted Nugent has Covid, but no worries, he's still dead-set against vaccines:
"I was tested positive today, I got the Chinese shit," Nugent added. "I've got a stuffed-up head, body aches. My God, what a pain in the ass. I literally could hardly crawl out of bed the last few days… So I was officially tested positive for COVID-19 today."
RIP, Fritz Mondale
Best President we never had:
When Walter Mondale — the pioneering vice president under President Carter — ended up on the losing end of Ronald Reagan’s landmark 49-state landslide in 1984, he fretted that it would dominate, even warp, his legacy.
But in reality Mondale, who as a senator was a spokesman for racial justice and an opponent of the Vietnam War, was a fiery reformer who selected the first female member of a national political ticket; an introspective populist who tried to rally Americans to care for the poor during the Reagan-era ascendancy of industrialists and bankers; and, in retirement, a beloved senior statesman of the Democratic Party and sober-minded prairie practitioner of common sense.
“Many politicians look for personal advantage,” said Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, who counts herself among the many Mondale proteges in his native state, “but he always wanted to do the right thing.”
Known simply as Fritz to both friends and foes, Mondale died Monday at age 93, his family said in a statement. No cause was given.
Mirage?
Sacramento hit a record-high temperature for the date on April 18th (91 F), and yet the weather models have been teasing rain in a little more than a week, for at least the last week. It's like Lucy with the football. People in other places don't worry about stuff like this. No one in the UK posts excitedly about the mirage of some rain in a little more than a week.
And yet, the mirage is there.... It does look like it will rain on Sunday....

Uncut Gems - Gigi D'agostino - L'amour Toujours
I've hated just about every film Adam Sandler was ever in, except one: "Uncut Gems," which is something close to a masterpiece. Among the many reasons for loving it is the end-credit music: Gigi D'agostino's "L'amour Toujours." Back to 90s House music!

Unclean
The partisan divide is a big problem when it comes to Covid-19, and the likelihood of getting vaccinated.
"How do we ever get to herd immunity if a quarter of the country has already decided to never get vaccinated?"We won't. Society will split further. Covid-19 will soon transform into partisan leprosy. We'll do our vaccine-passport best to shun Republicans. Unclean! Unclean!
Bladeless Wind Turbines
Cool!:
The new turbine, which has also been called the “Skybrator” due to its phallic shape, is capable of harnessing energy from winds without the sweeping white blades everyone associates with wind power. It generates wind energy thanks to vibration and without generating the environmental and visual impact on the fauna of the large wind farms.
About 3 meters high, it is basically a curve-topped cylinder fixed vertically with an elastic rod, specially designed to withstand both bending and stress. To the viewer, the turbine appears to waggle back and forth. However, it is designed to oscillate within the wind range and generate electricity from the vibration.
Love This Blog!
I need to write like this:
As limp and embarrassing as the whole sordid show has been, we should still make note that Republican officials no longer even hesitate before threatening to bring the full unholy fury of the state down upon the heads of uppity private sector dissenters, and like, I know I come off like a broken record sometimes, but this is yet another Thing Republicans Do That’s Indistinguishable From What Fascists Do.
Another Trump-administered lesson in authoritarianism swiftly internalized by the entire GOP is that when it comes to their credulous, grievance-crazed base, there is simply no limit to the power to fool some of the people all of the time. New polling shows alarming numbers of Republicans blindly believe every dumb, crazy lie the Velveeta Vulgarian and his enablers told about the 2020 election, because gaslighting and victimhood are two whiny wingnut tastes that taste great together.
Panic!
Lindsay Graham is completely panicked by the U.S. withdrawing from Afghanistan. Panicked!
Nevertheless, I'm not panicked. Egging on permanent war creates its own risks. Sometimes it's better to withdraw. The Taliban can't change, won't change, unless the conditions change, and an American withdrawal will change the conditions.
What A Mess - April 11, 2021
As the W-X freeway-widening project begins in earnest, many of the homeless camps that proliferated during the last five years under the freeway are being cleared out.
Five years ago, I remember thinking, ‘If I were homeless I’d stay here, because of protection against the rain.’ Others thought the same. By last year, these camps had become crime hot beds. I tried to help one young woman who was pepper-sprayed in the face by a young thug. And now, wave a wand, back to square one.
Today, most of the people at the 22nd Street camp have departed. Looks like there is much assorted debris for the taking. There is apparently a ‘safe-space’ area close to I-5 that has been designated for them, but I don’t know if it’s big enough to accommodate everyone.
Meanwhile, the 23rd Street camp emptied at the start of the month. The orange bat-removal gear is visible at each weephole under the road bed at 23rd Street. I worry whether bats were displaced by construction near the light rail overpasses last year, and whether they’ve returned. I worry about these bats. I worry a lot, in general. I have my bat Echometer. I need to get out to these places and see where the bats went.
22nd Street on April 12th. What a difference a day makes!

Ira is Ill
I learned on Sunday April 4th that my good friend, Ira Gershin, is very ill, and might well pass away by the middle of May. I hope to go to Las Vegas to see him soon, but there are a variety of obstacles that will likely delay or complicate that trip. So, until matters clarify, I will start looking for pictures and other information chronicling our 34 years of friendship.
In 1978, in the company of friends Jeff Anderson and Ira Gershin, I tried to reproduce my 1975 Grand Canyon trip with David Baltz, but we met powerful obstacles. The temperature was much hotter than on the 1975 trip, and we lost valuable time trying to puzzle out a descent after we lost the trail. We ran out of water on the burning south-facing cliff faces. So, we retreated and opted instead to travel to Zion National Park, in southwestern Utah.
Ira Gershin, early June, 1978.
Just as we had run out of water at the Grand Canyon, we began to run out of money in Zion. We decided to go to Las Vegas, in order to get closer to 'civilization'.
In Las Vegas, we decided to phone home for money if necessary, but decided to first try self-reliance. We pooled what money we had left and gave it to Ira to try his luck at the blackjack table. Ira was successful! He more-than-doubled our money!
The previous day we had to brush ants off of cheese blocks in order to eat anything at all, but now we were in the lap of luxury. We saw Bill Cosby perform his comedy act (I think it was at the old MGM Grand, before the big fire, and now called Bally's), and we ate our fill at the buffet lunch, before returning to Albuquerque.
Daniel Gershin's Bar Mitzvah Celebration, October 25, 2008, following the Orthodox Bar Mitzvah Service At Chabad Of Summerlin, earlier in the day.
Left: Mazeltov to Daniel Gershin! On the left is his Uncle, Sam, and on the right is his Father, Ira.

Time for a conga line!
Pleasant and fun celebration with the extended Gershin clan at the Santa Fe Casino in Las Vegas. Two DJs/MCs led lots of party games, including Coke/Pepsi races across the dance floor, the Limbo, a Conga Line, and numerous other diversions.

Well, this is concerning. I usually traumatize most orchids I get with my patented overwatering and underwatering regimen. All their flowers fall off early, and stay off. Except this one....

The Biden Boom Is Nigh
It's going to be nuts:
NEW YORK (Reuters) -Taco Bell wants to hire at least 5,000 employees in one day, it said on Tuesday, and is adding benefits for some general managers to sweeten the pot as restaurants struggle to hire enough workers to keep up with a surge in sales amid a broader U.S. economic recovery.
..."Total nightmare" is the way FAT Brands Inc CEO Andy Wiederhorn describes the staffing situation for franchisees of his company's restaurants, which include Johnny Rockets and Fatburger.
"The most recent stimulus check and unemployment benefits have been a catalyst for people to stay at home" instead of looking for work, he said. U.S. job openings in the accommodation and food service industry increased by 104,000 to reach 761,000 on the last day of February from the prior month, according to federal data on Tuesday.
Though fast-food companies and some other restaurant chains did well through the coronavirus pandemic as their customers turned to drive-thru, carry-out and delivery, they are seeing greater sales now that the weather is warmer, many limits on dining room capacities are lifted, and people with stimulus checks are eating out.
A measure of U.S. services industry activity surged to a record high on Monday amid robust growth in new orders, the latest indication of a roaring economy boosted by increased vaccinations.

Rachel Hoover's Submissions To RTAA For The Properly Masked Singer
Over the last eight weeks, I assisted Rachel put together her video submissions to Roseville Theatre Arts Academy (RTAA) for their second annual singing contest, The Properly Masked Singer (TPMS). Rachel originally dubbed herself Diva McSchmiva, and then Narcissa, but was eventually dubbed The Party Animal, because of her conical party hat. Rachel placed fourth in the contest.
It was a fun experience filming Rachel Rycerz as she competed. Every week, a new song; a new scenario! She did great!
Here is a compilation video of her competition songs. Fun songs and acting!
The various components of the compilation are here:
