A piece of coastline rose around 5.5 metres during the Kaikoura earthquake, startling survey teams measuring the extent of uplift caused by the magnitude-7.8 quake a week ago.
The amount of uplift along the coastline was highly variable, GeoNet said.
"The startling uplift of ~5.5m at Waipapa Bay is a localised block pushed up between two traces of the Papatea Fault and is thankfully not representative of the whole coastline."
